(pg. 37-38)
The land cession of August 29, 1821 concluded at Chicago, Illinois ceded a narrow strip along the northern boundaries of Indiana adjacent to the state of Michigan in which the greater part of the land cession was located. Particularly in the western portion of this strip, along the St. Joseph's river, the region was occupied by the Potawatomi at the time of the cession. Since the greater portion of the drainage system of the St. Joseph's river is in Michigan and the settlement pattern tends to follow the river basin, this area is discussed along with the other Michigan cessions. The cession of October 16, 1826, involving the tract designated by Royce #133 will be considered in the same section.
