A CONTROLLED SURFACE COLLECTION AT THE VAN NUYS SITE, HENRY COUNTY

The Van Nuys Site (12 Hn 25) is a large site lying in the Upper Big Blue River glacial sluiceway. The controlled surface collection of one 19,000 m2 portion of the site produced over 3000 artifacts plus large quantities of fire-cracked rock and burnt clay. It was possible to demonstrate that distinct activity areas could still be identified despite years of plowing and that buried features most likely survive. It was also possible to show that the site is essentially single component, apparently a Late Woodland village contemporary with the Commissary Site (12 Hn 2), a burial ground lying on the edge of the till plain less than 1000 m to the east, on which excavations were carried out by Ball State University during several seasons between 1966 and 1984.
