AN OVERVIEW OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXCAVATIONS AT THE BLUEGRASS SITE (12 W 162), WARRICK COUNTY

The Indiana State University Anthropology Laboratory conducted archaeological excavations at the Middle-Late Archaic Bluegrass Site (12 W 162) in 1981-1983 and 1987. A well-defined dark midden was identified, and subplowzone cultural deposits occurred over a considerable area. To date, 125 5 by 5 foot square units have been partially or completely excavated, and 82 cultural features, plus numerous human interments have been identified. Floral and faunal remains collected from the site have a potential for providing valuable subsistence information, and the tools and waste debris provide a means for examining Middle-Late Archaic technological systems and trade. In addition, data generated from Bluegrass and other Middle-Late Archaic sites in the area may be sufficient to develop a more refined phase sequence for the Middle-Late Archaic of southwestern Indiana.
