DATABASE ENHANCEMENT GRANT PROJECTS: COLLECTOR INTERVIEWS IN
THE COALFIELDS OF SOUTHWESTERN INDIANA
With the support of funds from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division
of Historic Preservation and Archaeology, archaeologists from the Glenn A. Black
Laboratory of Archaeology conducted two Data Base Enhancement projects within
the coalfields of southwestern Indiana. Artifact collectors and amateur archaeologists
were identified and interviewed, and site information was gathered. The projects
focused upon a sixcounty area within the coalfields consisting of Greene, Daviess,
Dubois, Pike, Spencer, and Warrick Counties. Information also was gathered on
portions of Knox, Gibson, Martin, Perry, and Vanderburgh Counties. A total of
837 new sites were recorded and more than 1000 total site records were obtained.
Approximately one-fifth (20%) of all sites now on record for the six-county target
area was recorded during these two projects. This work has proved very productive
and successful; further projects such as these could provide much the same results. [return to 1987 abstracts menu][continue to next]
