CULTURAL RESOURCES AND COAL MINING; AN UPDATE
There has always been a precarious balance between the needs of industry and development
and the rapidly disappearing cultural resources. For the last five years, the
regulations dealing with cultural resources have been severly weighted in favor
of the coal industry. On September 22, 1922, new regulations were adopted by the
Natural Resources Commission and submitted to the Office of Surface Mining for
final approval. This paper reviews the changes in language and responsibilities,
potential problems and emphasizes the need for cooperation in the archaeological
community to address the concerns inherent in cultural resources. [return to 1992 abstracts menu][continue to next]
