THE 1992 EXCAVATION OF THE CLAMPITT SITE 12 Lr 329
The 1992 excavations at the Oliver phase Clampitt site were a continuation of
work begun in the summer of 1991. Once again, this project was undertaken in association
with the Indiana University Field School in Archaeology. Support was provided
by the Department of Anthropology and the Glenn A. Black Laboratory of Archaeology
at Indiana University, Bloomington. The work was directed by the author with the
help of four graduate assistants. The work of excavation was carried out by seventeen
students from IU-Bloomington, and one student from IU-Indianapolis.
During the 1992 season, an additional 471.0 square meters of the village site
were exposed and numerous subsurface pit features were recorded and excavated.
Continued exposure of the stockade trench in all areas of the site revealed a
closed circular stockade configuration (see Figure
17). Additional testing on the southern periphery of the village discovered
the remains of a second or outer stockade trench that paralleled the first.
Large excavation blocks were completed in the southeastern and southwestern quadrants
of the village. The southeastern block exposed a distinctive gap in the inner
stockade trench that most likely represents a door or gateway. Numerous scattered
post molds and a few small pit features were discovered in this same area. Another
scatter of post molds situated between the inner stockade line and a feature cluster
identified in 1991 was revealed in the southwestern block. Although no recognizable
house patterns were discerned in this area, it is believed that such feature less
zones were used for habitations.
Excavation during the 1992 season extended into the northern half of the village
site as well. In this area a badly plow disturbed human burial was discovered
as were several small pit features and one possible burned earth (i.e. hearth)
feature. A resistivity survey conducted by Stephen Ball successfully located a
large pit feature in the northeast quadrant of the village. A comprehensive report
describing both seasons of excavation at the Clampitt site is forthcoming. [return to 1992 abstracts menu][continue to next]
