It is particularly gratifying that the first edition of An Introduction to the Prehistory of Indiana (1973) was so well-received that a second edition is warranted. The ten-year interval has seen a continuing growth in Indiana archaeology and, while the text of the new parallels that of the old, it has been modified to reflect some of the changes.
I wish to express my appreciation for information and assistance from several colleagues: Cheryl A. Munson, Robert Pace, and B.K. Swartz, Jr. Also, the many representatives from the Wabash Valley Archaeological Society and Indianapolis Amateur Archaeological Association have helped to make this a worthwhile personal venture.
The figures were prepared by Rosie Meer, and I am indebted to her. Photographs were provided by the Indiana University News Bureau and the Glenn A. Black Laboratory. Osborne 1 made the manuscript preparation much simpler.
Finally, it is with gratitude and sense of debt that I acknowledge the many contributions of J. C. Householder. For more than fifty years he has pursued an avocational interest and in the process has made numerous additions to our knowledge of prehistoric man in Indiana.
