Each year since 1986 a distinguished scholar has been asked to give a lecture to commemorate the accomplishments of our archaeological colleague and benefactor, Eli Lilly. The lecture is delivered at Angel Mounds State Historic Site during the first week of April, on or near the anniversary of Mr. Lilly's birth on 1 April 1885. Subsequently, each lecturer is offered the opportunity to publish the text of the lecture. Professor R. Berle Clay is the second scholar to avail himself of this offer. The first was James H. Madison, historian and biographer of Eli Lilly, who presented the second lecture entitled "Eli Lilly: Archaeologist" on I April 1987 (Indiana University, Glenn A. Black Laboratory of Archaeology, Research Reports, No. 8, 1988). I thank Professors Madison and Clay for making the text of their lectures available to the wider audience that comprises the membership of the Archaeology Section of the Indiana Historical Society.
