The groundstone tool assemblage recovered from the Clampitt site was rather
impoverished. This may be due, in part, to the lack of nearby sources of crystalline
rock. Pitted anvils and abraders manufactured from local sources of sandstone
were recovered as were crude hammerstones made from naturally occurring geodes
( Plate 9 ). Geode fragments
also made up a large portion of the fire-cracked rock sample from the site.
The complete grinding stone found in Burial Feature I (see above and
Plate 4 ) was made from granitic rock. This artifact and only a few
fragments of tools made from similar material, attest to the limited availability
of high quality materials. The presence of such a tool in a burial context may
therefore reflect the careful curation of a highly valued artifact.
