THE OHIO VALLEY-GREAT LAKES ETHNOHISTORY
ARCHIVES: THE MIAMI COLLECTION
It is noted that the following work from the Miami Archives should be read and
considered within the historical context in which it was composed and printed.
The opinions expressed and the language used do not reflect the opinions or
standards of the Glenn A. Black Laboratory of Archaeology, but are, rather,
indicative of thought in that historical moment during which the document was
published.

Jenison, French Series,
III, pp. 904-905.
On my arrival in this colony I had the honor to give you an account of the services lately rendered by the Sieur de Langlade, who at the head of the Chippewa and Ottawa of Mackinac by the late M. le Marquis de la Jonquiere's order had marched to (page 905) go and chastise their brothers the Miami. He had gained so high a reputation from the success of his attack that I asked you for a pension of 150 livres for him. Since by your silence I have inferred that you do not wish to accord him this favor, and since he is a person to humor from the power he has on the minds of the Indians, let me, I beg of you, ask for him a commission as ensign en second, half-pay; this will suffice to arouse his zeal when he is needed.
