5th.- Thro' great mercy I have been very easy all night & my pains are almost gone; ye weather very warm.
6th.- There are about 30 Picks come here, & we hear from Niagara that it is like to be taken by General Johnston.
8th.- The Colonel told me yesterday he thought it not necessary to lay out a place for a house for my employer, as he believed ye General would take ye remnant of our goods & that ye store would not be continued.
9th.- I got some help today to worm ye skins that had been wormed before, but as I told them they should have to be wormed soon again. Many of them are spoiled, and it is with great difficulty I can get any help, all are so employed. One man, being an old acquaintance of mine named Hugh McDonald, who belongs to ye Artillery, is very willing to assist me at all spare times when off duty & Lieut. Wright of ye Train, relieved him of duty, that he might assist me in all he could but by ye Colonel's orders its now put out of ye Lieutenants power, but still he helps me when he can, which is great kindness in Lieut. Wright also. Lieut. Sumner, of Virginia, & Capt. Clayton, from ye Jersies, & Ensign Hutchins, of Carslile, were all singular in kindness, spareing Rum or Sugar, altho' very scarce, in mine & Samuel's sickness, also Lieut. Hidler of ye Train, & little Doctor Johnson.
10th.- Wormed skins until ye heat of ye Sun got too strong, being hurtful. In ye afternoon helped Ensign Hutchins to take ye course of ye rivers & ye hills from ye Point at ye old Fort, as also ye width of ye rivers, but by ye time we were done it made me something unwell again, being still weakly.
13th.- This day ye Indians bring intelligence that ye French have lost Niagara & that they have burnt Venango & Presque Isle & gone off.
14th.- Letters came here by a command that came in
