It is noted that the following work from the Miami Archives should be read and
considered within the historical context in which it was composed and printed.

As a Report prevails here that We are in a few Days to be attackd by a Large Body of French & Indians, & as severall are travelling down the Country, who are too apt to be fond of spreading such Reports tho' perhaps without any Foundation, I have thought proper to write You what has come to my Knowledge.
Yesterday Capt Croghan inform'd me that He had had Intelligence from an Indian who had been drinking with Others over the River. That he heard Them talk that in five Days a Large Body of French & Indians was to be here, but did not seem to give much Credit to the Intelligence. As to the time of Their Coming it agrees with what We were told by an Indian about a Month ago. What looks a little suspicious, the Indians who have ever swarmd about us are mostly gone off & I hear Delaware Georges people are come from Pine Creek (his plantation) but have left Him behind
We are very busy putting Ourselves in a posture of Defence, to give Them a warm Reception, I have ordered Capt. Croghan to send out His Spyes, sho'd any Thing extraordinary happen, you will have the Earliest Notice from
