THE OHIO VALLEY-GREAT LAKES ETHNOHISTORY
ARCHIVES: THE MIAMI COLLECTION
It is noted that the following work from the Miami Archives should be read and
considered within the historical context in which it was composed and printed.
The opinions expressed and the language used do not reflect the opinions or
standards of the Glenn A. Black Laboratory of Archaeology, but are, rather,
indicative of thought in that historical moment during which the document was
published.

Sir
I take the opportunity of a French boat (wch passes by this post in a very great hurry) to forward to your Excellency the Inclosed Letter from Monsieur de St. Ange which he recommended to me to deliver from my own hands, but wch. I thought proper to forward as our Voyage to the Illinois will probably be long and that your Excellency woud choose to receive it without loss of time.
I am informd by a Frenchman who writes me by this Boat from the Illinois that Mr. Croghan arrived at the Shawanese Fort on the Ohio below ye Mouth of the Ouabache & that he had been attackd the morning of the next day by a hundred Indians of the Ouiachtonon Nations; that several Chiefs & whitemen of those who were with him had been killd & he himself wounded & taken prisoner, My Correspondent coud not inform me of any further particulars, but promises to acquaint me with the cause by the first opportunity. As I am sure he must have had a certainty of Truth of what he informs me of I begd of Majr. Farmar either to give me his permission to go forward to the Illinois or send some other person who may endeavour to withdraw Poor Mr Croghan from the hands of those Barbarians- I am persuaded that this has befallen him without Pondiacks knowledge, & hope he'll get him releasd & enable him to act agreable to your Excellency's wishes.
Majr. Farmar does not give faith to my Intelligence & will not permit me to have him tell he is further informd in regard to it the rascally French Traders are (by authority) at the bottom of this, which I am affraid is too true.
I shall have the honour to write you Sir how soon I have another letter from the Illinois & 'am with profound respect
