Letter to Gage

(Detroit, July 25, 1765)

Campbell, John in: Clements Library,
Gage Papers, American Series,
Vol. 40, Reel #10.

Detroit July 25th 1765

Sir,

This day I received Dispatches from Mr. Croghan & Lieut Fraser for your Excellency & Sir William Johnson, which I have forwarded by Express to Niagara, in a Battoe man'd wt. Soldiers, & one Frenchman for their Guide, having it not in My power to incur any Expences without approbation, I could promise them nothing for that Service till I am favor'd with your Orders in regard to Expresses, I was obliged to use force wt. the frenchman, as he declined going, except I assur'd Him of payment for His trouble, which I could not promise. it gave me great pleasure to receive letters from Mr. Croghan, & Lieut Fraser, after the late bad accounts I received concerning them. Mr Croghan writes that he Supposes I will have a great Number of Indians at this Post very Soon, as all the Illinois Indians are comming here to meet Colo. Bradstreet in consequense of the invitation He sent them last Autumn,- in case they do come I shall be intirely at a loss what to do with them, I have got no provision to give them or any thing else, without incurring more expenses, which I will endeavor to avoid if possible, and with that Mr. Croghan may arrive here in due time to Settle Matters with them. The enclosed intelligence I received from Mr Croghan, which corresponds a good dale wt. the Reports from Michilimakinak some time ago, & lately contradicted from thence.

I am in great apprehension of running Short of provision, before any Supply arrives here. The last Spring day we could only get one Barel out of Nine of Pork, that could be Issued.- About eight days ago I received your Excellencys letters wt. My Accompts disapproved off, and ever since I am a good dale perplex'd about them, and extremely uneasy that My Conduct & proceedings at this Post, has met with your Excellencys intire disapprobation. I hope in a little time to be Able to explain My Accts. in such a manner that it may Still meet w. your Excellencys approbation, at present I cannot, for want of time, as I forward the Despatches from M Croghan & Leu. Fraser immediately, with Orders to the Party to proceed wt. the utmost expedition, I have writ to Colo. Vaughan requesting of him, to forward them from Niagara by express with despatch. I have the honour to be wt. the greatest Respect Sir

your most Obedt most humbl Sert
John Campbell
