Reel no. 11.

Fort Chartres Augt. 30th 1766

Coppy

Sir,

I have had A General Conference with the Several Nations here & the Deputys of the Nations that Accompanyd. me from Fort Pitt and have Setled A General Paice with all the Nations in this Country.-

The several Nations here is nott so Ill Disposed A people as I at first thought, but they have been poisen'd by the French who has taken every meathod in thire power to Represent the English to them in the worst Light in order to secure the Indian Trade to themselves, which they have Compleatly don to this Time for the Traders that come here last Spring from Fort Pitt has not yett purchasd. fifty Pounds worth of Peltry.

Was there here a sufficient number of Troops to Garrison y posts and keep the French in good Order I dare say the Indians would soon be well Reconciled to thire new Fathers, Coll Reed Commands here with about 200 Men, but not above fifty fitt for Duty the Garrison being verry Sickly so that we cant say that we have taken posision of any part of this Country more than the spott where Fort Chartres Stands, as yet The French trading where they Please & Carrying there Peltry to New Orlanes as they Did before the Country was Ceaded to Great Brittain.

Plese to present my Complymts to all the Gentlemen with you & Believe me with great Esteem & Regard your most

Obedeant, and
Most Humble
Servant
