18 Two boats belonging to the Philadelphia trading firm of Baynton, Wharton and Morgan had been robbed on the Ohio River in August and the crew of eleven men killed by a party of Ottawas from Saginaw Bay, Lake Huron. The Indians reputedly were led by Pontiac's nephew. Jehu Hay wrote to Croghan on October 15 that the chiefs from Saginaw Bay had visited him on October 2 to ask mercy for their young men who were members of the party. Hay made no promises of immunity until he had consulted Croghan.
