Letter to Andrew Waggener

(Pittsburgh, Oct. 1, 1776)

The Commissioners (Walker, Harvey, Montgomery, Yeates) in: Papers from the Yeates Collection relating to the 1776 Treaty of Pittsburgh, Historical Society of Pennsylvania.

Pittsburgh Octr. 1st. 1776.

The Commissioners for Indian Affairs in the middle Department & the Commanding Officer of the Garrison at Fort Pitt, having received Information that some of the Scouts appointed to range on the Ohio, & its Waters have crossed the Ohio & ranged the North Western Banks in the Indian Country in Order to discover the Motions of the Savages & their Intentions, and being fully sensible that the said Practices may tend to embarrass the Negotiations of the ensuing Treaty, & to precipitate an Indian War, do hereby in pursuance of the late Resolutions of the Council of the CommonWealth of Virginia, recommend & direct to the officers of the regular Forces & militia of the said Commonwealth stationed between this Place & Fort Randolph, that the Scouts aforesaid be ordered not to cross the Ohio or range through the Indian Country, unless in the Pursuit of a Party of Savages who have committed actual Hostilities. The Comr & Commanding Officer do not intend by this Recommendation to relax the Diligence or Attention of the Scouts on the Frontier Settlements; On the contrary, they think no Pains should be spared in Watching the Motions of the Indians. But it is absolutely necessary to use every Precaution to prevent alarming the Fears of the Indians in the present Crisis, of public Affairs.
