It is noted that the following work from the Miami Archives should be read and
considered within the historical context in which it was composed and printed.
The opinions expressed and the language used do not reflect the opinions or
standards of the Glenn A. Black Laboratory of Archaeology, but are, rather,

Monseigneur,
The adventure which befell the fourteen Frenchmen, who were stripped of everything by 200 Iroquois near the River of the Oumiamis, interests us, we having done what we could to comfort them. M. de Beauvais, who is like an animated letter and will forget nothing, will tell you all he knows; and the (page 337) letters he is taking will inform you of the position in which the Chevalier de Baugy was placed, who, supported by some Frenchmen he has with him, and a few Indians, defended himself courageously in their fort. The check which the Iroquoys received there will humble them a little, but it will not remove their intention of seeking revenge. Heaven grant that the King has listened to you, and is sending you troops to subdue these insolent people. God must be on your side in that task. We will entreat him continually to be so, through the mediation of the Most Holy Virgin and of Saint François Xavier, patron of this Mission, who so often assisted the Portuguese in their appeals to God against the attacks of the infidels of the East Indies. M. de La Durantaye, who is indefatigable in his journeys for the public service, and everywhere sets us a very good example, is going to the Illinois for the twelfth time, to relieve the Chevalier de Baugy. Father D'Allouez accompanies him, to perform his duties to the Frenchmen and Indians he will meet on his way. May God bless their journey! We expect them here about St. John's day.
