The Memorandum of Lamothe Cadillac

as to the foundation of a post at Detroit,

forwarded to Canada.

_____________

Versailles, 27th of May, 1699

His Majesty sends them a memorandum which had been drawn up by the Sieur de Lamothe Cadillac, containing a proposal to settle (page 322) all our Indian allies, as one community, in the area lying between Lake Erie, Lake Huron and the Lake of the Illinois. As the said Sieur de Lamothe's reasons are set forth in the memorandum, His Majesty will not repeat them here; he is, however, very glad to tell them that they seemed to him to be plausible and to deserve to be examined on the spot; for it is certain that, if all the results which the Sieur de Lamothe leads us to hope from it were likely to follow, and the post was not open to great objections, His Majesty would willingly consent to it. He wishes them, therefore, to call together the principal settlers and the most intelligent men in the country, to consider this proposal in the presence of the said Sieur de Lamothe, and that they should carefully discuss all the arguments for and against this scheme, in order to be able to send an exact account of it to the King; and, in case the proposal is found to be good and practicable, His Majesty wishes them to take the necessary steps at once, for carrying it out as soon as they receive His Majesty's sanction.
