(page 218)

He cannot but find a great resource in the influence and friendship which he has acquired with La Demoiselle and with the (page 219) son of Le Gris, whom he will send after. This last Indian has much influence with La Demoiselle. It is therefore a question of inducing him to go to speak with La Demoiselle, and to make all possible efforts to bring that chief, with all his band, back to their old village. To this end the Sieur de Villiers will give Le Gris's son as well as Le Pied Froid the complete costume of chiefs, with which we have provided him. He will also make them some other presents.

He will send La Demoiselle a complete chief's costume which we have also provided.

After the Sieur de Villiers has had La Demoiselle spoken to by the son of Le Gris, and after he has made sure of La Demoiselle's word that he may come to see him without any risk, he may leave his post and go thither with an escort of some French and of the most faithful Indians of Le Pied Froid's band. He will take with him the son of Le Gris, and all this on the sup- (page 220) position that he thinks the journey necessary in order to recall La Demoiselle and all his band to their old village.

If he makes the journey mentioned, he will leave the command of his fort to the son of M. de Celoron and will give him his instructions. M. de Celoron has orders to fill up the garrison of the Miamis to the number of ten soldiers.
