Pakan[M]

Aug. 31, 1788

Hamtramck reports to Harmar that he had sent Capt. Furgeson twice to a Patrick Brown, from Kentucky, to demand from him the horses stolen from Pakan. Fugeson was directed to inform Brown that Pakan & his Indians were employed by the U.S. Pakan is now at the Miami to learn of the results of a council at la Rocke du Bout with the British comm. Brown and his men had killed some of Pakan's & La Demoisell's Indians. Pakan had gone to the Illinois with Harmar. Pakan's Indians are at La Tere Haute waiting for his return.

Pakan, whom Hamtramck had sent to the Miami, returned from La Roche du Bout when he heard about some of his band being killed. He returned before the council had begun.

Jean Bapt. Costan, a Wea interpreter, reported to Hamtramck that "when he left the Weeya village a courier had arrived from Capt. McKee the British commissionarir for Indian Affairs to request their Chiefs to attend to a treaty that was to be at La Roche Dubout which is about thirty six miles from Detroit on this side, that the chiefs were gone and not yet returned. Pakane the Indian chief who went after the drumer the deserter last year and a good Indian, is going to the Miami and will know the result of this council."

They have all promised to take their furs there. The general news is that a party of Ouiatanon is to go settle there."
