Material Remains
BONE
The sample of faunal remains consisted primarily of small, unidentifiable bone
fragments and, generally, the degree of preservation of most uncharred organic
remains was disappointingly poor. Only five recognizable worked bone objects have
been recovered from the site. Two bone beamers manufactured from deer medipodials
were recovered from units A and BBB (Figure
4, Plate 4a). Two bone awlswere also
recovered from Unit BBB; one appears to be made from a fragment of a broken bone
beamer. The other artifact (also from Unit BBB) was identified as a bead, but
this item is unfinished. This last item is actually made from an antler beam fragment
that has been rounded and then scored and snapped. An analysis of the faunal remains
recovered from the Cox's Woods site is presented in Appendix
D. Information concerning the subsistence practices of the site inhabitants
is limited because of the poor bone preservation at the site. However, the study
found that turkey, elk, rabbit, drum fish and various species of turtle were present
in the faunal assemblage.
