Timothy Schilling, Ph.D. (Washington University in St. Louis, 2010)

Dr. Schilling's research investigates the Mississippian societies of the pre-Columbian Southeast and Midwest, focusing on the connection between monumental architecture, Native American Beliefs, and social organization. His work uses a geoarchaeological approach to examine mounds and other elements of the built environment. In addition to North America, he works in Africa. His latest travels have brought him to Benin and Sudan where he is working on various geological aspects of the archaeological record. His research interests include Eastern North America, moundbuilders, monumental architecture, geoarchaeology, and Bayesian modeling of archaeological data.

Research Interests: Midwestern Paleoindian and Early Archaic settlement and subsistence strategies.  As a part of this research, my dissertation project uses Geographic Information Systems  to incorporate paleoenvironmental reconstruction with early hunter-gatherer site and archaeological data in an effort to better understand mobility patterns.  I am particularly interested in lithic data, sourcing and technology.  I have been involved in archaeological projects in Germany, Wyoming, Montana and Indiana.  As a former brewmaster, I am also interested in the role of fermented beverages in prehistory, and teach a class entitled “The Archaeology and Appreciation of Beer”.
