Mound F in the beginning phases of excavation.

This is a view to the east of the second trench dug into the mound area from the south. The first trench was completely beyond the area of carried earth and the second trench was nearly so. The first trench can be seen at the extreme right partly back-filled.

About midway of the second trench a lateral trench can be seen. This was excavated with two thoughts in mind. First, we wished to determine the exact extent of carried earth vs talus and this could be best noted in the faces exposed in the north-south direction. Secondly, and more important, we were confident that this mound would prove to be the total result of erecting a series of mounds, one on top of the other. It was important, therefore, to pick up evidence of an inner structure as soon as possible so that the final mantle of earth could be stripped of the one immediately preceding it.

In the east face the junction of talus with undisturbed subsoil can be seen. This is true with the east-west face along the north side of the trench. Also note, in the north face just east of the lateral trench, a slight projection which marks the presence of a fireplace located upon the old ground surface at the time this phase of the mound was built.
