Mound F
The slope representing the south side of the inner mantle of Mound F has here been exposed for a north-south distance of twenty feet. Four pioneer graves can be seen at center and left of center where they had penetrated the primary mound surface. At this point we were positive that we had located the primary mound and since it was desired to expose the entire surface of this primary structure by stripping away all of the secondary earth, we went to the top of the mound and prepared to remove the west half of it, layer by layer, horizontally.

In this picture the men are removing vegetation from the west half of the mound preparatory to excavating the first layer. The back-fill in the lower part of the view represents the first trenches which contained no features of importance and into which the earth from succeeding trenches was thrown.
