Mound F
The now famous fluorspar figurine is shown in situ. It was in a pit which had been dug into the upper level of the secondary mantle of Mound F and faced east. The camera is oriented directly west in this picture. The location of the pit was at the southeast corner of the truncate apex. Two pioneer graves were nearby --in fact there was one on each side of the figurine -- if either one had been moved north or south by a matter of two feet the figurine would have been found and removed or perhaps broken. The discovery of the pit was made by a workman used to looking for such disturbances and as soon as the outlines were seen trowels were used for removal of the earth from within the outlines of the disturbance. As a result the figurine was uncovered without a scratch.
