Seven Decades of Archaeological Field Schools

Because of the dedication of our staff and the generous support of both our founder, Eli Lilly, and Indiana University, the Glenn A. Black Laboratory of Archaeology has been able to provide opportunities for hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students to participate in the discovery and understanding of Indiana's prehistory through our summer field school program. We particularly encourage students with an interest in anthropology, archaeology, geology, art history, physical anthropology, or geography to explore what a summer session at our field school can add to their college experience. Every summer's field experience is different, so be sure to check back at the "Field School" tab on the home page of this website to find out what we have planned for the upcoming summer!

Many of our summer field school students have gone on to become well-respected archaeologists and anthropologists. Many more have left our field schools and pursued other careers and opportunities with a profound respect for Native American culture and a lifelong appreciation for the science of archaeology. No matter what our students choose to do when they leave our field school, they know that their efforts in this course have benefitted their own career and helped to further scholarship and understanding of the prehistoric peoples that first inhabited Indiana.
